Question

Marc,
Could you clarify the material studies assignment for next week?
(Whatever I wrote in my book makes about as much sense as sanskrit)...
Thanks!

materials are now being considered for their performative qualities...in others words, the effects they may generate.

you are asked to consider a prominent space (volume) in your project and create a drawing that conveys this 'atmosphere.'

This is a perspective drawing (collage? other media?) from within the space.

What is the character of the space as a consequence of the materials you have chosen? convey how the material responds to light?..water..? pressures exerted by the program..?site..?

you may photocollage in images...such as the sky if the horizon is important...

you need to study these materials seriously. as example...if you are defining a concrete wall...you should know what it is cast against...what are the qualities of the edge...such as a board formed concrete (as we see scarpa use) vs plywood or another surface...

think about color...but control yourself...this is not a coloring exercise...it is not representational...

some of you may consider a tiling exercise...such as the vacuum pressured pieces in the hall...

dont get caught up in SHAPES and FORM...address the materials as a priority.
