Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but a studio called Crucial Detail makes interesting eating utensils for a restaurant in Chicago called Alinea (www.crucialdetail.com).

On the other side of the spectrum...
There is a restaurant in the Raval distric of Barcelona called Foodball (owned by Camper, the shoe company). I just picked up the November 2006 issue of Dwell and read an article about Marti Guixe, the designer. The whole concept of Foodball, aside from being ecologically conscientious, is that it is a dining response to a society of mobility (ie. fast food, but inventive fast food). All their food is shaped into balls, thereby eliminating the need for tools and eating utensils. The usual formula of restaurant dining-- such as tables and chairs-- are abandoned for things like indoor bike racks and wide concrete steps for informal/picnic dining. In the Dwell interview, Guixe talks about how he came up with the concept of Foodball. He wanted to solve the problem of "pan con tomate" (bread rubbed with tomato, a local Catalan staple), which is messy and difficult to eat on-the-go. His solution is a small cored tomato filled with a piece of bread-- a simple reversal of the ingredients-- that does not require utensils or clean-up.
Worth checking out... it's a good antithesis to Crucial Detail.
