Calatrava Sketches

Santiago Calatrava

Penelope,
One of my favorite architects, Calatrava, has designed the new WTC Transit Center. He is also a painter and a sculptor, and most of his designs have been inspired by things he sees in the natural world. He somehow turns beautiful watercolor sketches of a something such as a fruit or animal into some of the most fantastic architecture in the world. Check out this site: http://www.calatrava.org/

Eero Saarinen- Airport Terminals

Penelope,
Here are images of Eero Saarinen's airports- Dulles in Washington, DC and the TWA terminal at JFK.

These are the image I took a few years ago. I'm sorry but I can't remember anything about this photos. But as you see it used movement of bird's wings to roof design.

Curiosity Cabinet

"Cornell offers curiosity cabinets that beckon us to examine their strange functions and
contents, yet are enclosed and prohibit the engaged play that seems to define those very
objects. Throughout his work, Cornell evokes a reverie of childhood, yet there is also the denial
of the possibility of fully retrieving that moment of child's play. Metaphorically, the space and
time reverie seeks to recollect are sealed off from our experience -- these are constructions of
lost time and the losses of time." by James McCorkle from Joseph Cornell's exhibition.

People usually use a cabinet(or drawer....) to keep their stuff or valuable things. Sometimes they use the cabinet to hide somethings, and sometimes to protect somethings..... This could be a preserve of their time and memories related with that things, and I'm thinking about it's relations.

Curiosity Shop Info

1.
There is a great curiosity shop in SoHo called Evolution. It is on Spring Street between Mercer & Greene.

2.
Albertus Seba was a pharmacist and collector of natural objects in the 1700's. He collected plants, animals and insects and procured specimen from the sea from sailors at the docks near his pharmacy in Amsterdam. I believe he was around before Darwin's time so he also catalogued some imaginary creatures as well. He ultimately arranged and commissioned illustrations all of the things he had amassed into a four-volume thesaurus.

3.
The Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 reminds me of a huge curiosity shop of sorts. I remember reading about all of the displays of objects from all over the world. It was divided to show historical art, furnishings, etc. and then had another section devoted to industry and the newest, most modern machines. I think there was also a natural history section.

Atlanta

Penelope,

When you were talking about your program being a terminal, I was thinking about my hometown, Atlanta, which originated as a result of the construction of a railroad terminal in the 1830's. The original name of the city was actually "Terminus" 20 years before it was changed to "Atlanta." Transportation was the catalyst for the city's growth both economically and physically. It is now one of the largest cities in the South.
You can probably find out a lot more info about how terminals (like ports) shaped cities across the nation, which I think is fascinating. I thought I'd throw that out there to help you cogitate :)

This is my diagram about youth hostel. I wanted to present relationship between people and the youth hostel space. I tried to make it deeper so searched a lot of movies but I couldn't find out. I need heeeeeeelp.

Dinner Movies

Let it be known that "My Dinner With Andre" is impossible to find on the island of Manhattan.

And so, I found a little French film called "The Dinner Game," which (based on the title and short synopsis) I thought would be a suitable substitute. I soon found, however, that the movie is not about a dinner, but rather about what happens when a man who is planning to go to dinner ends up having to cancel, but does not have time to tell the stranger he invited. It is certainly the story of a different kind of 'blind date'.

Pierre Brochant (Thierry Lhermitte) is a bored, arrogant publishing executive who livens up his upper class existence by attending "idiot dinners" hosted by his friends. For these soirees, each attendee is required to bring along a guest who embodies some aspect of human stupidity. The oblivious idiots, not understanding that they are the butt of a private joke, are flattered, and their sponsors enjoy the competition of trying to outdo each other by bringing the dimmest bulb in the lot. Then, one day, Pierre meets François Pignon (Jacques Villeret), a tax official whose hobby is building models of famous landmarks with matchsticks In François, Pierre believes he has found the perfect idiot for the next dinner. Unfortunately, on the night of the event, Pierre throws out his back and is unable to attend. His newfound friend, however, insists on staying around to "help" him, resulting in a series of mini disasters that leave Pierre's comfortable life in ruins. Call it the idiot's revenge. -Review by James Berardinelli

Blind Dates & Menus

I am going to diagram the qualitative aspects of the menu/restaurant scenario. I was thinking about the thought process and ritual of ordering food off of a menu, and also thinking about the social ritual of blind dates (as Marc suggested).
When ordering dishes off of a menu, a person takes into account three main factors:
1. Courses (ie: ordering one from each, appetizer, entree, and dessert- as opposed to ordering 3 desserts. I have been known to order only dessert when out to dinner at a casual restaurant with my family or my best friends. But would never do so if out to lunch with my boss. This is a matter of social etiquette)
2. Price (I would not order the most expensive item if my friends parents took me out to dinner, but I would consider the most expensive item if my parents took me out to dinner, or if it were a special occasion. This thought process is also dictated by social etiquette)
3. Food Type (I ignore any fish and pork dishes on the menu because I don't eat those types of food. Some people choose food type based on what they had for dinner the night prior, or what they're "in the mood" for).
When on a blind date, there is an additional level of assesment- you are judging and being judged by your date. Physical presentation, conversation, body language, etc. is being closely studied by your date, and vice versa. Since everything about you is brand new, even the smallest things will not go unnoticed. This creates a huge amount of anxiety and pressure to be perfect. This pressure is exaggerated or relieved based on your own assesment of your date. If you like them, you will become more nervous and if you don't, you can relax somewhat.
Does anyone have suggestions on whether I should try to reconcile assessing a menu with assessing a date? Or if I should just choose one or the other to diagram? Any other thoughts on blind dates and menus? :)
Thanks, Kate

Diagram of a Menu

Based on my interest in hospitality design, I chose to diagram the menu of the Four Seasons Restaurant (a quintessential Manhattan restaurant designed by Philip Johnson & Mies van der Rohe in 1959). The menu can be found here: http://fourseasonsrestaurant.com/index2.htm

Tufte Books

For more than a decade, Edward Tufte has been championing efficient, coherent and effective ways of presenting information. Through his books and seminars, Tufte has shown that the endless sea of information that we are forced to wade through does not have to be as dense and confusing as it often is.
Envisioning Information focuses on rendering complex and often three-dimensional information in two-dimensional space; on "escaping flatland" as he says. "The world is complex, dynamic, multidimensional; the paper is static, flat." Tufte presents hundreds of examples of effective information presentation, in the form of diagrams, maps, charts, timetables and more.
The Visual Display of Quantitative Information is the classic book on statistical graphics, charts, tables. Theory and practice in the design of data graphics, 250 illustrations of the best (and a few of the worst) statistical graphics, with detailed analysis of how to display data for precise, effective, quick analysis.

Program

According to my good friend Wikipedea...

Program can be a plan of how to do something. It tells the steps that we think we need to do to make something happen. For example, a government might make a program to improve the health of the people in part of a country by giving the people better food, by helping to kill insects that carry diseases, and by bringing more doctors.

A computer program is something a computer uses to work. For example; computer games or web browsers

Television program(me) is a show that is on television.

Radio program is similar to a television program but it is on the radio.

Webcast is similar to a television program but it is shown on the Internet.

12-step program is a way people use to stop doing something. Examples would be to stop drinking alcohol, stop smoking tobacco or stop using drugs.

an event program is something lists the what will happen during an event such as an opera or auction.
