Penelope & Young Ji

Hi Ladies,
Since I have Easter-related obligations this Sunday, yes, I am sitting here doing homework at 10:30 on Friday night...
Anyway, Penelope, the assignment is to locate a critical area in your project and write 3 short narratives from POV of 3 different people who use the space. To aid in this, read the de Certuau chapter called "Spatial Stories" (pg. 115 in Practice of Everyday Life book)...focus on tour vs. map. Think about how they would perceive the building, how they move through, the qualitative aspects, and the rituals...
Also, make sure you have a concise thesis statement and think about a name for the project.
Young Ji, don't forget to post the Eisenmann book as well as the other site/case study you were thinking about in Battery Park for me :)
Gracias.

I am going back to previous idea.
I got a solution from apple building in 5th ave. 59st.
Thanks, Eunyoung!!Here is the picture of it.
My concept is the connection. So I try to put two buildings which have a different material in one space.Main building will be maden with steel and bigger glass builing will embrace the steel building.

back to diagram

in his bookChaosmosis, Félix Guattari develops a general ecosophy; a project that is informed by a curious feedback loop. In the 80s, Deleuze & Guattari’s concept of the rhizome had served as a metaphor for net- and hypertexttheoreticians. In Chaosmosis [and thus in the 90s] one can observe a folding back of the concept of the rhizome onto Guattari’s thought. Guattari now reverts back to hypertext – as a rhizomatic network – to describe new structures of thought. Thus, the new hypertext theory now functions, after it has been rhizomized, as a diagram and matrix for the inventor of the original metaphor, who thus seems to inspire himself. In this context, Guattari sees in a hypertextual tought a possibility to regain multiplicity: “The informational lines of hypertext can recover a certain dynamic polymorphism and work in direct contact with referent Universes which are in no way linear” (49).¶In the 90s, however Guattari goes again a step further than the hypertext theoreticians. In a very bold move, he once more align the levels of linear vs. non-linear that had been so carefully separated by Aarseth. Guattari does so by crossing hypertext theory and complexity. The non-sequentiality of a continuous text [on the level of the signifier] is supplemented by a non-linearity, for instance in the choice of foldings [and this means a mathematical non-linearity]. In this context, one might also have a closer look at the term ‘ergodic’ from within the field of complexity theory].¶The hypertext architecture, in which – as in a rhizome - every point can be connected to every other point [that is, in which every point can be folded onto every other point] and in which the user is able to travel from one textual attractor (on the level of the signifier, the signified or both) to another through a short series of non-linear foldings stands for a different cognitive diagram than the one figured by printTexts: [ => a dynamic network of synapses. The related question of course is: in how far are there rhizomatic synapticarchitectures in the brain? Is the brain a hypertext?]¶Guattari’s demand that “the time has come for hypertexts in every genre, and even for a new cognitive and sensory writing that Pierre Lévy describes as ‘dynamic ideography’” (96-7) has to be understood against this background. According to Guattari, thought will change qualitatively in the new medial surroundings: “the junction of informatics, telematics, and the audiovisual will perhaps allow a decisive step to be made in the direction of interactivity, towards a post-media era and, correlatively, an acceleration of the machinic return of orality” (97). The basis for this change is, as with hypertext, the ‘becoming’ [the dynamics or kinetics] of the structure. The [textual]subject is understood as an endless becoming or emerging: “a processual, polyphonic Being singularizable by infinitely complexifiable textures, according to the infinite speeds which animate its virtual compositions”

Material Research

Around Bleecker ST and Carmine ST, I found this building (looks like catholic church,,) which is being under revovation. The status of this builing shows the space between the zoo and human society physically in my view. What I want to say is that the main pillar symbolize the human space. And outer cover of material surrounded the main pillar represents the zoo space and mixture of human animal space.

Steel: is a very strong metal which is made mainly from iron. It is used for making main material of cook ware and cutlery. In the space, steel become a volume and meshes.

Wood (Bamboo): In Chinese kitchen, Bamboo is used many ways such as chopsticks, steamer etc.

Glass: As a glass container shows inside contents, glass makes a communication with other materials. Moreover, it could be overlapping the volume and space.

Materials Study

This is a 'door-wall' in one of the public spaces of the hotel...perhaps just beyond check-in, before you reach the elevators to go to your room.

Each time you engage in a regimented act in the space, you then engage in an act that represents individuality. Each person who uses the space will have opportunities throughout the space to influence the architecture.

In this case, it is by way of moving different types of doors and creating different passages and implicit spaces in the process. Each time a door is moved, a new type of space and path of movement is created.
The top drawing is of the 'door-wall' in the completely closed position. The bottom drawing is of the 'door-wall' in the completely open position. Obviously there are numerous variations and configurations of the wall and the space between these two extremes, depending on which doors are open and how wide.

The materials I chose are directly influenced by the site. The Highline is an adaptive re-use project. The building, 450 W. 14th Street, will also be an adaptive re-use project, from a meat packaging company to a hotel. I will focus on using environmentally consious materials througout the space. Since this space is adjacent to the Highline, I use steel, concrete, reclaimed wood (representative of railroad ties) and bamboo (representative of grasses and plants that have taken over the High Line).

Hidden Door

There is a hidden door in a hidden floor 7 1/2 in the movie "Being John Malkovich."
When people enter that door they can reach to John Malkovich's head. They can feel as John Malkovich feel and see as John Malkovich see. Many people want to enter the door in the 7 1/2 floor to experience John Malkovich because of curiosity of someone else's life.

Curiosity is any natural inquisitive behaviour, evident by observation in many animal species, and is the emotional aspect of living beings that engenders exploration, investigation and learning. Traveling is one way to experience another life. While we are traveling we can experience different time and place, meet different people and apart from ordinary life.

As the hidden door in the movie "Being John Malkovich", this youth hostel is a hidden door to enter different world. This door is exit to leave from ordinary present life and also entrance to experience different life.

concrete : material which can represent present life.

transelucent concrete : This can be the intersecting material between ordinary life and the life people want to experience

glass : This shiny and transelucent material is representing the life people are dreaming and wanting to experience.

material..study.

i did some studies about light and shadow.

primary element in space is glass.

there are many kinds of glass like colored, patterned etc.

i see the relationship between light source and material..*like a refraction, and reflection things.)

material research

Stone - Limestone, slate : the most ancient of all finished materials. and it has the same

formal properties whether used for walls or for floors. People can feel massive

quality from the material. I want to show a permanant concept of time and constant

nature by using stone.

Rusting metal : a partition made from perforated metal gives a sense of separation without

the thickness of a solid wall. can feel time passed-changes of time.

Glass : glass can open up a space and enclose it at the same time. It is transformational in its

ability to change the atmosphere of a space by letting in light. communications between

inside and outside.

drawings

main materials are semi transparent glass and bamboo wood floor. Light green and greenish grey color will be added in fabric. These color show connection with adjacent building( concrete) and high line as it's name "chelsea connection"

These are the sketches and material board(18x18).

post

post the drawings due for last tuesday.
you should have done this immediately following our class...since you couldnt get the work on the wall...get it on the web.

my next step

1.investigate and research on exisiting conditions of my new site - by analyzing the building and it's tidal changes would give me an idea on what aesthetic and practical approach i'd be able to do (ex. waterfalls, cooling system)

2.make new model to give relation to my program idea.

3.research more on the qualities and effects of water, movement of tides, migratiion of birds, and hull of boats to have possible performative techniques to the space created. also, look on what ties all these things together or address one and see how it plays out.
