Curiosity Shop Info

1.
There is a great curiosity shop in SoHo called Evolution. It is on Spring Street between Mercer & Greene.

2.
Albertus Seba was a pharmacist and collector of natural objects in the 1700's. He collected plants, animals and insects and procured specimen from the sea from sailors at the docks near his pharmacy in Amsterdam. I believe he was around before Darwin's time so he also catalogued some imaginary creatures as well. He ultimately arranged and commissioned illustrations all of the things he had amassed into a four-volume thesaurus.

3.
The Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 reminds me of a huge curiosity shop of sorts. I remember reading about all of the displays of objects from all over the world. It was divided to show historical art, furnishings, etc. and then had another section devoted to industry and the newest, most modern machines. I think there was also a natural history section.
