Penelope & Young Ji
Since I have Easter-related obligations this Sunday, yes, I am sitting here doing homework at 10:30 on Friday night...
Anyway, Penelope, the assignment is to locate a critical area in your project and write 3 short narratives from POV of 3 different people who use the space. To aid in this, read the de Certuau chapter called "Spatial Stories" (pg. 115 in Practice of Everyday Life book)...focus on tour vs. map. Think about how they would perceive the building, how they move through, the qualitative aspects, and the rituals...
Also, make sure you have a concise thesis statement and think about a name for the project.
Young Ji, don't forget to post the Eisenmann book as well as the other site/case study you were thinking about in Battery Park for me :)
Gracias.

Material Research

Sunday, April 1, 2007

Steel: is a very strong metal which is made mainly from iron. It is used for making main material of cook ware and cutlery. In the space, steel become a volume and meshes.
Wood (Bamboo): In Chinese kitchen, Bamboo is used many ways such as chopsticks, steamer etc.
Glass: As a glass container shows inside contents, glass makes a communication with other materials. Moreover, it could be overlapping the volume and space.
Materials Study

Hidden Door
When people enter that door they can reach to John Malkovich's head. They can feel as John Malkovich feel and see as John Malkovich see. Many people want to enter the door in the 7 1/2 floor to experience John Malkovich because of curiosity of someone else's life.

Curiosity is any natural inquisitive behaviour, evident by observation in many animal species, and is the emotional aspect of living beings that engenders exploration, investigation and learning. Traveling is one way to experience another life. While we are traveling we can experience different time and place, meet different people and apart from ordinary life.

As the hidden door in the movie "Being John Malkovich", this youth hostel is a hidden door to enter different world. This door is exit to leave from ordinary present life and also entrance to experience different life.

material research

Stone - Limestone, slate : the most ancient of all finished materials. and it has the same
formal properties whether used for walls or for floors. People can feel massive
quality from the material. I want to show a permanant concept of time and constant
nature by using stone.
Rusting metal : a partition made from perforated metal gives a sense of separation without
the thickness of a solid wall. can feel time passed-changes of time.
Glass : glass can open up a space and enclose it at the same time. It is transformational in its
ability to change the atmosphere of a space by letting in light. communications between
inside and outside.

my next step
2.make new model to give relation to my program idea.
3.research more on the qualities and effects of water, movement of tides, migratiion of birds, and hull of boats to have possible performative techniques to the space created. also, look on what ties all these things together or address one and see how it plays out.
